Buzz Bissinger is to Speaking as he thinks Bloggers are to the Internet

June 16th, 2008 | by ethanator1088 |

Buzz is talking about blogs again. Buzz Bissinger is to speaking as he thinks bloggers are to the internet. This guy throws around generalities like it is nothing. He said he hates blogs, calls bloggers cowards, says he meant every word he said to Will Leitch, and then he apologizes for it. This guy has a serious problem making his point. He thinks of the next clever thing to say and forgets to tie it all together. He backtracks and destroys his points with outlandish blanket statements. He is much better at typing. He is a Pulitzer Prize winning writer, but he has diarrhea of the mouth. Then he apologizes for it. He thinks his swear words ruined his point that he thinks he so adequately made on Costas Now. If you take the swear words out of what he said, you are still stuck with nothing. Just Hatred. No Point.

He needs to write about blogs. He needs to collect his thoughts and come to a rational coherent explanation of sports blogs. He is too passionate about whatever he is talking about to make sense. That is what makes him a great writer and a bad speaker. That is why I had never seen him before the Costas Now interview, and that is why he is now the mouth piece for Anti-Sports-Blog-ism. He is however a one trick pony. I do not think he will be the spokesperson for much else.

His gift of masticating the English language is not as good as his penmanship. I am not picking on him. I think this is an obvious explanation. That is why he is a writer. You do not see song writers sing much. You do not see Pulitzer Prize winning writers speak off the cuff much. The reason is that the pen that flows in his hand can see several self edits, several friend’s eyes, his wife’s eyes, and several editors before it makes it to public print.

With Buzz’s generalities he has helped make the hatred of blogs seemingly acceptable by most sports media. You can love blogs or hate blogs. No one will care, if you trash sports blogs all day. They have no idea what a blog is. They might even respect you for putting the blog filth in its place.

The fact is that blogs are just like online magazines. They are not like newspapers at all. Magazines give articles and opinions and interviews. They are main stream media. Some magazines are smutty, gossip, hate mongering, pieces of trash. Some blogs and blog commenters are that way as well. Then again, you also have Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News,  Slam Magazine etc… The Blogging equivalent would be The Sporting Blog. < Yes Buzz, the Sporting News has a blog. Those are my favorite bloggers.

Buzz needs to realize that there are hundreds of thousands of online sports magazines that he calls blogs. When he generalizes, he is talking about each one of them. He needs to carefully take a stance, and then finalize his thoughts. My next post will be what I think Buzz Bissiniger’s stance would be, if he knew what he was talking about. :-)

I did a piece last week where I interviewed a sports journalist that works for the Commercial Appeal. I chose him because he is younger and I wanted to get the opinion of someone that isn’t the “old guard” type.

While he wasn’t anything like Bissinger, Costas, Conlin, Roy Exum, or Stephen A. Smith, he still sounded like most in the professional media.

They don’t get blogs because they mistake blogs as journalism. I explained to him that we aren’t attempting to be journalism, but a source of information and entertainment. We’re also trying to provide another point of view, our opinions and analysis on the topics before us.

That’s what the media doesn’t get. It’s not about bloggers taking away their jobs - it’s the Internet in general and the access to immediate information.

Another enjoyable piece. Get that link up to my site - I need all the help I can get.

Moondog. You are too kind as usual. The link is up.

I think that the opinion of people will change when they are completely taken over and they all have a personal blog that gets ” Zero ” hits a day. :-) Then they will realize that some of the good blogs most be worth reading.

Couldn’t be prouder of you. Keep writing. This isn’t a blog, is it? Blogs are no good.
