ESPN’s The Sports Reporters Live Scoring Game, 6/22/2008. This is a new Sunday Feature on NESW Sports. I will do the scoring for the Sports Reporters Show. It comes on Sunday mornings on ESPN. I was getting ready for my lesson so I watched it on the DVR this afternoon. I will continue to do this every Sunday and will keep an all time tally sheet.
These are the rules.
- There are always 4 players. They are all sports writers and one of them is the mediator.
- I will give points based on how the panelists do during the segments.
- The segments are the conversations they have inbetween commercials. It is hardest for the mediator to win, but it is possible.
- I give out the points and I will be very tough on them.
Scoring Rules
- You can get a bonus point for having a the best opening line. Sometimes a lot of truth can be jammed into a short comment. If there is not a great opener, the opening bonus point is forfeited.
- You get 2 points for winning a segment. There are usually 3 segments unless there are quite a few stories. If there are multiple conversations during one segment, there will still be a single winner. You can get a negative point in a segment for any number of faults that are completely arbitrary to my judgement.
- At the end of the show there are “parting shots“. The winner of this round gets 3 points. The mediator has a chance of winning because they usually get the longest parting shot, and it is usually the only thing they bring to the plate.
OK now onto the show. The Panel is William Rhoden, Mitch Albom, Bob Ryan, and the mediator is Jeremy Schaap.
No great comments for opening of the show.
The bonus point is forfeited. Mitch Albom gets a negative one point for using the phrase “What a difference a week makes” for the second straight week. I am watching you guys
- Round one Bill, Bob, Jeremy Love, and Mitch -1.
1st Segment. They talk about Tigers Win at the US Open.
They all agree that it was a great achievement. No news there.
Mitch starts off strong saying that Tiger is the only person that the PGA markets. That is true. Bob Ryan comes in a with a strong interjection. These players are doing this to themselves. They can not blame Tiger for getting less coverage. They should win.
You have to bring your statements strong to the hole Mitch. Denied by Bob. Bob Ryan gets 2 points for making the great interjection.
- Bob 2 points. Mitch -1 point.
2nd Segment. They finally get to the NBA Championship after 12 minutes into the show.
Bob and Mitch agree that Defense wins championships. Where have I heard that before? No points will come of that. William Rhoden brings up the fact that this Celtic’s team is very embraceable. The finals showed us all another side of Paul Pierce. He gets the job done and does it well.
Points go to Mr. Rhoden for not being the third person in a row to say that defense wins championships.
- William 2, Bob, 2, Mitch -1
3rd Segment. Willie Randolph gets fired.
No good points were made at all. Points forfeited for round.
4th Segment Parting Shots. This is called the money ball in this contest. Everyone is in the game. Even Mitch can tie it up by draining a three in the waning moments of the program.
Bob Ryan lays down some nicely timed jokes lobbying for Tayshaun Prince and Michael Redd to be on the 2008 Olympic team. He points out that, as far as international basketball is concerned, we are the champions of nothing.
Jeremy Schaap Tried real hard with PacMan Jones banter, but failed and got some gratuitous chuckles from the panel.
Bob Ryan wins the first ever “The Sports Reporters Live Scoring” game. He wins with a score of
- Bob= 5
- William= 2
- Mitch= -1
Tune in next week. Please leave comments if you agree or disagree. Thanks! Congrats Bob Ryan!

If you are referring to why I do not do the Sports Reporters recaps anymore it mostly because I am concentrating on sports videos.
