Bill Hohn, Umpire Fist Bumps Marlins Catcher vs Braves, Video. As a huge braves fan, I have been searching high and low for this vid. On July 29th 2009 in a Marlins vs Braves game we had the beginning of “Fist Bump Ump Gate”. Bill Hohn, a 20 year MLB vet, the umpire crew chief was working behind home plate. He ejected 5 Braves players/managers over the course of his last 2 games, including this one. As the Marlins recorded their final out of the game, the catcher turns around to fist bump the ump, and Bill Hohn gives and emphatic fist bump.

1. Why did the catcher feel the need to do it?
2. I know it is human nature to “not leave someone hanging”, but Mr. Hohn put a little something behind that fist bump.
3. Chipper Jones was outraged, as all Braves, Braves fans, and baseball fan in general should be.

Bill Hohn should be suspended. He should not be a crew chief for a while. You can’t have this type of stuff going on. 2 teams play every game. It is not 2 teams vs 1 team. The umps should never pit themselves against a team. I can not believe MLB has done nothing about this.

  1. I would agree that the fist bump was totally uncalled for, but it was hardly emphatic. Maybe all of these bad strike calls against the Braves is simply karma for the two foot wide zone that Greg Maddux used to get when he pitched for the Braves!

  2. um….braves are guilty of the same:
